How to Throw a Pixies and Pirates Birthday Party Your Kids Will Never Forget

For Thea's eighth birthday, we went all in with a Pixies and Pirates party. We don't do big parties every year, but when we do, we make sure they're something special. This one was full of magic, adventure, and memories we'll never forget.

A Special Science Tradition

One of the most exciting parts of the party was led by my mom, who was a science teacher for years. She has a tradition of hosting a science-themed birthday party for each grandchild when they turn eight. One time only, which makes it extra special.

She had the kids completely hooked with hands-on experiments that fit perfectly into the theme:

  • Colored Fire: Vibrant flames lit up the room and the kids couldn't get enough of it. (How to replicate it)
  • Pixie Bubbles: Dry ice and bubbles combined for a fog-filled spectacle that had kids jumping to pop them. (How to replicate it)
  • Pixie Beads and Fortune-Telling Fish: Color-changing beads and fortune-telling fish kept everyone curious and engaged.
  • Flying Pixies: A simple, fun experiment that had everyone giggling. (How to replicate it)
  • Pirate Test of Fire: Kids got to safely handle flames and feel like real pirates. Note: this requires expert supervision and a chemistry background. Skip it unless you have one. (About this experiment)

Decorations

We started with a balloon arch dressed up with dollar store flowers for a whimsical touch. Around the room we added fairy gardens I made using items from the dollar store. They brought the pixie theme to life and gave the whole space an extra magical feel.

Girls received fairy makeup and glitter spray in their hair. Boys rocked pirate eye patches.

Homemade Root Beer and Bubbling Science Beakers

One of the highlights was the drink station. We made homemade root beer, and the dry ice bubbling in large science beakers created an effect nobody forgot. The fog spilling over the edges had the kids mesmerized.

Homemade Root Beer

  • 2 gallons cold water
  • 2 pounds sugar, adjusted for desired sweetness
  • 1 bottle root beer extract, like Zatarain's or McCormick's
  • 2 to 3 pounds dry ice for the bubbling effect and carbonation
  1. Combine cold water and sugar in a large container and stir until dissolved.
  2. Add root beer extract and mix well. Taste and adjust as needed.
  3. Carefully add chunks of dry ice using gloves or tongs.
  4. Let the dry ice bubble until fully dissolved. This chills and carbonates the root beer naturally. Serve immediately.

Important: Wait until all dry ice has fully dissolved before serving.

Party Favors and Sweet Treats

Treasure chests, fairy wands, pixie dust, pirate eye patches, and fortune-telling fish. Many were 3D printed at home. Links to STL files and Amazon alternatives are below.

For dessert, my friend Stephanie made the most amazing cupcakes using recipes from Cake by Courtney. Beautiful and delicious.

A Party to Remember

This party was a labor of love, and watching Thea light up as she celebrated with her friends and family made every bit of it worth it.
