Why I Created the Zones Board
Beckham was masking at school and melting down at home. By the time we could see it, he was already past the point of no return.
His OT introduced us to the Zones framework. A color-coded system that gives kids a way to notice how their body feels before they hit that wall. We built a board around it.
It gave us a shared language. He could tell me he was in the yellow zone before he got to red. That changed everything.

From Emotional Chaos
-
To Calm and Connection
| Feeling this? | Imagine this instead: |
| ❌ Your child can’t explain what they feel | ✅ They point to a color to show how they feel |
| ❌ Meltdowns seem to come out of nowhere | ✅ You catch the signs early and support before they escalate |
| ❌ Your child masks emotions all day | ✅ They have a safe, visual way to check in |
| ❌ You’re guessing what kind of help they need | ✅ They choose a calming strategy that actually works |
How It Works
Hang the board where your child can see it. Check in together. Ask what zone they are in. Use the regulation strategy clings to help them find their way back to calm. Over time, they start doing it on their own.
1. Choose the Zones Board
Magnetic acrylic for the fridge or wall-mount hardware for a bedroom, therapy room, or classroom wall.
The magnetic version is fridge-friendly and built for daily check-ins at home, in therapy spaces, or at school.
2. Learn the Four Zones
Green Zone: calm, focused, ready to learn. Blue Zone: sad, tired, bored. Yellow Zone: frustrated, silly, worried. Red Zone: angry, overwhelmed, out of control. All feelings are okay. Each zone just needs different tools to move through it.
3. Check In Daily
Ask your child what zone they are in. In the morning. After school. Before bed. The more often you use it, the more natural the language becomes.
4. Use the Regulation Strategies
When they find their zone, use the strategy clings to help them get back to calm. Kids start choosing strategies on their own over time.
